My name is Mr M Dalvi Humzah, a senior Consultant Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeon. I trained at King’s College in London, and completed my higher specialist training in Edinburgh including a Hand Fellowship at The Hand Clinic in Windsor, before being appointed as an NHS Consultant in 1998. I am a Full Member of the British Association of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (BAPRAS) and have published extensively, presenting my clinical work both nationally and internationally. I head the specialist team here at Alliance Surgical for abdominal cosmetic surgery.

If you are unhappy with the shape of your abdomen it is possible to have this area re-shaped by a procedure known as an abdominoplasty, often called a tummy tuck. This is an operation to remove any loose tissue and fat on your abdomen and tighten up the muscles. The overall aim is to produce a tighter, flatter abdomen and boost confidence in your appearance. These procedures are not designed to be a way of losing weight.

There are two main types of abdominoplasty procedure, the full abdominoplasty and mini (partial) abdominoplasty, the differences and benefits of which will be discussed with you during your initial consultation.

If your muscles are very stretched they will be pulled together and stitched in place to tighten and flatten your abdomen. Skin and tissues are pulled down so the skin can be removed and then stitched in place. Liposuction is sometimes carried out at the same time to obtain the best results. The procedure may take 2-3 hours to perform and is carried out under a general anaesthetic. This operation is a major procedure and uncomfortable, though we can control any discomfort through the use of painkillers. You will need to stay in hospital overnight, though sometimes two nights are required.

Typically following surgery, you will feel your abdomen is tight and you may have difficulty standing upright. This feeling will subside and you will be able to mobilise and within 2-3 weeks you should be able to return to work if it is not too physical. After 6-8 weeks you should be able to undertake heavy lifting with more strenuous exercises, with the final result being a flatter and less flabby stomach which may be judged from about 3-6 months.

Our priority is providing you with the information you require to make an informed choice to undergo the procedure and giving you the highest quality clinical service.
